Karen Neems, a photographer and mixed media artist, considers herself a collector of images, mining them for unexpected combinations. The framework for her compositions is layered, merged and repeated. In her photo collages, light and shadow draw the viewer in while another image floats on the surface; the elements have a certain familiarity, but the space remains a mystery, creating a visual puzzle. Often, the composition transcends the importance of identification of the objects. Whether creating collages digitally or manipulating materials, Karen is drawn to the aspects that contain and formalize a space. In a society where we are constantly being bombarded by loud, disparate and raw imagery she aims to create a calm and enchanting world within the frame.
Karen has had many solo shows and her work has been included in selective exhibitions throughout the Tri-state area. She has won numerous awards for her work in photography and mixed media. Karen received a BA in Art History and Psychology with a minor in Studio Art from the University of Rochester, and has worked in different capacities in several museums and galleries. She is a Silvermine Guild member and on the Board of the Silvermine Arts Center.
